About

Bryan Hatchett has photographed eastern Virginia for forty years. He is a native of Hampton. For nineteen years, he edited and published the annual “Chesapeake Bay Watermen Calendar.” The photographs on this website begin with those calendar pictures. Beyond the Bay, Hatchett has turned his camera to a broad range of quiet spaces and nighttime scenes

Hatchett is the photographer and author of Tidewater Spirit, published in 2021 by The History Press.

Hatchett’s “day job” has been as a lawyer in New York, first with CBS and later at Food Network. Retired from active practice, he continues to divide his time between New York and Virginia. Hatchett is a graduate of Washington & Lee University and a law graduate of University of Richmond.

“In the summer of 1980, when my career moved me from Virginia to New York, I set out with a borrowed camera to take a few pictures of where I came from — my hometown of Hampton. New York turned out to be a good place to learn photography, to meet working photographers, to see their prints in galleries and museums. Taking pictures became part of my rhythm of living in New York and my visits back to family and friends in Virginia.”
